You may think that trees are doing absolutely nothing in the winter, but in fact, winter is a big growing season for them.
While trees seem dormant above ground, their underground system of roots are busy at work growing, searching, and retaining nutrients. The roots are bulking up so that they will have enough energy to grow buds for new leaves and flowers in the spring.
