The pandemic has turned an increasing number of Americans into citizen scientists. Programs such as
NestWatch- a nationwide nest monitoring program designed to track status and trends in the reproductive biology of birds. Participating in NestWatch is easy and anyone can do it. The other program that is really popular is SciStarter- a place to find, join, and contribute to science through providing people access to more than 2700 searchable formal and informal research projects and events.
These programs let amateurs share data on wildlife in areas where universities don’t have funding to send naturalists.
With people stuck at home and able to devote attention to nature, submissions to these programs have risen as much as 41 percent this year.
