Outdoor Wooden Compost Bin-The Valentina
Alternative Views:
(patent pending)
24" high
cedar
handmade in the USA
With great delight, I introduce Valentina, a most gorgeous and effective outdoor Composter. I am a huge composting enthusiast with a strong sense of aesthetics. I designed Valentina and I am very pleased with the result. Valentina was given a one year test and passed beautifully, I am proud to say.
I only started composting my kitchen and yard waste 4 years ago, and I have made up for coming late to the game, by improving on a great concept.
I began by reducing the size, to better accommodate apartment dwellers and single family home owners. I also constructed Valentina from non toxic and weather resistant cedar, and added a small vent in the back, to allow for air circulation, necessary to the composting process. I also added wheels, so you can move Valentina easily wherever you need it to be. Valentina comes with a flat "roof", which opens easily, with a secure latch to keep it ajar while you add your "greens" and "browns", naturally chopped or crushed into smaller pieces, to speed up the process of decomposition. As you add your materials, they will sit and slowly decompose in the upper chamber, which is divided by a layer of chicken wire from the lower chamber. As the materials decompose, they get smaller and will fall through this chicken wire and pile up on the floor of Valentina. This lower chamber can be accessed by a lower door flap, which opens up, and where you can scoop out your wonderful dark brown composted material. Put it in a bucket and use it in your garden, to condition the soil or add to potting mixes for plant containers.
Valentina can also double as an outdoor side table, as long as you have been monitoring the smell factor, which Valentina should not have, if you are mixing up the materials inside and not letting it get too wet. It can be painted on the outside any way that you would like, or just leave it plain and let it weather naturally. DO NOT paint the inside though!
It really is satisfying to make your own compost using your very own kitchen and yard waste. It's the ultimate in recycling and such an easy way to reduce waste going to landfills. When I think that the rotten bananas, lettuce or tomatoes, don't need to be thrown out in the regular trash bin but can be turned instead into very useful, nutrient rich soil conditioner, to replenish the depleted soil in my garden, is phenomenal.
Included with Valentina, is a list I wrote of basic composting instructions and 8 images to illustrate examples of compostable materials.
Did you know...
that each individual effort helps, and that if we all started composting, we could help prevent global warming by reducing emissions of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas which gets produced when organic waste decomposes when it's been buried in landfills.
