In case you didn't know already... there are only 700 mountain Gorillas surviving in the vast tropical and subtropical forests of central Africa. Since the Gorilla was discovered 100 years ago, it has endured uncontrolled hunting, war, disease, destruction of their forest habitat, and capture for the illegal pet trade. Did you know... that Gorillas are herbivores, feeding on fruit, shoots, bulbs, leaves and occasionally tree bark. They live in family groups that are led by a dominant male, called a silverback because of the silver hair that runs down his back.
About the Center for Biological Diversity:
At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature - to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law, and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters, and climate that species need to survive. We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive.
In addition, you can
adopt a Gorilla through the WWF
:
WWF is supporting protected areas and other conservation programs across the lowland Gorilla's range to ensure that no population is neglected. Your donation will be used in general support of WWF's efforts around the world. 82 cents of every donated dollar goes toward conservation. WWF has been recognized by charity navigator as a four star charity, and is a Better Business Bureau accredited charity.
