African Hand-Woven River Grass Basket - Medium
African Hand Woven River Grass Basket Medium

medium size

11" across

Handmade

Fair Trade

One of the first products I put in my store when I launched it in January 2009, was a large African Hand Woven River Basket. I love these baskets, not only because they are so useful, durable and very attractive but especially because they are Fair Trade and benefit women artisans in Ghana.

This new African Basket is a medium size, slightly smaller than the first one, and wonderful for creating your own gift basket, as a lunch basket for school or as a small picnic basket for two.

This African Basket is handmade by a weaver in the upper eastern part of Ghana, West Africa.  Basket weaving has been taking place in this region for many decades as a traditional family art of the Fra-Fra people passed down through many generations.

The baskets are used by the women to carry their goods to the market. The materials used are river grass, sustainably harvested, which is dried and trimmed, and eventually dyed with nontoxic fabric dyes. Depending on the model and the weaver, a basket can take from four to twenty hours to complete.

SPECIAL NOTE** the colors vary on the baskets, so they are all unique and gorgeous.

Proceeds from the sale of these baskets help to:
  • provide healthcare for the weavers and their families.
  • provide school supplies for the children of the weavers.
  • builds community weaving centers for several villages of weavers.
