The Neti Pot is a nasal wash that relieves sinus problems and cleans out bacteria trapped in the nose.

The nasal passages contain one of our body's first lines of defense against disease. They are lined with a thin layer of mucus that traps and disposes of dirt, dust, pollen, and other airborne particles. But if the mucus becomes either too thick and dry or too thin and runny, it is easier for bacteria and viruses to get past this nasal lining and cause problems.

I was not aware that the Neti Pot existed when I was growing up and found out about it through my cousin Pamela, who suffered from sinus problems. She found that using the Neti Pot regularly relieved congestion and sinus pressure. And it feels good!

The Neti Pot soothes dry nasal passages, gently washing away dust, pollen and irritants. Using it daily, as many people do, improves your quality of life, by reducing the need for medication and antibiotics. It also causes relief from hay fever and the common cold.

How this works

Special note: I would recommend doing this in private, as your household may not appreciate witnessing the cleansing process. My daughter Lucie was especially mortified when she saw me doing it.

Moving on...
You fill the Neti Pot with warm water and 1/4 tsp of Neti Pot Salt and let it dissolve. Lean yourself over a sink, and tilt your head to one side slightly, and pour the solution into one nostril, without letting it go down your throat. Just do a little at a time, until you get the hang of it. The water should slowly pour out the other nostril. Breath through your mouth. When you have done both sides at least twice, exhale vigorously to clear the nasal passages. DO NOT BLOW YOUR NOSE WITH ANYTHING. I wanted to blow my nose so badly that I grabbed a kleenex and did it, and felt like I almost blew my eardrum out. So, be careful! You can blow your nose a few hours later, to be safe.

Did you know... that this has been practiced in India for centuries as one of the disciplines of yoga.

Did you know... that clinical testing has shown that this practice is safe and beneficial with no significant side effects.

Did you know... that the nose is the "air conditioner" of the body. One of the many functions of the nose is to regulate the temperature and humidity of the incoming air. Some people have "dry noses" and suffer dry, nose bleed type problems. Others are "wets", with constantly running sinuses. Others have perpetual stuffy and blocked nostrils. Regular use of the Neti Pot helps to establish the correct working environment of temperature and humidity in the nose.
